ABOUT THE PROJECT IN BIOINFORMATICS

In present time, there is a high demand of quality training in Bioinformatics from students of various disciplines. In India universities took early note of these developments and started many teaching programmes in Information Technology, Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Technology. Students from all over the country have taken these programmes very enthusiastically and are enjoying these exciting new technologies. Over 60 programmes in the country are awarding M.Sc./M.Tech. (Biotechnology) which is supported by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India. In addition to these, many private colleges and institutes have also started awarding M.Sc./M.Tech. (Biotechnology) and some of them even B.Sc. (Biotechnology). Lately, some private institutes in addition to some IITs have embraced biotechnology and have begun B.Tech. programmes. Similarly large numbers of institution in the country are offering B.Tech. in IT, Computer Science, Bioinformatics or B.Pharma or M.Sc. in Life Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Pharmaceutical Science, Information Technology, Computer Science or BCA, MCA programmes. Since most of the new departments in these disciplines have come up in a short span of last few years and therefore, face problems related to adequate infrastructure and qualified faculty to conduct meaningful practicals and training in Bioinformatics.

This year too, on overwhelming demand, we are planning to conduct the semester project (Dissertation) & training programme during the summer of 2010. The training shall be given at Industry standards for providing state of art practical knowledge to students in various fields of Bioinformatics.

BIOINFORMATICS

Bioinformatics has emerged as a multidisciplinary subject that encompasses developments in information and computer technology as applied to biotechnology and biological sciences. Bioinformatics uses computer software tools for database creation, data management, data warehousing, data mining and global communication network. Functional genomics, biomolecular structure, proteome analysis, cell metabolism, biodiversity, downstream processing in chemical engineering, drug design, vaccine design are some of the areas in which bioinformatics is an integral component.

Bioinformatics sector is the quickest growing field in the world. The vertical growth is because of the linkages between IT and biotechnology, spurred by the human genome project. The promising start-ups are already there and there are over 200 companies functioning in India itself. The global bioinformatics market was valued at around $12 billion in 2001 and is expected to increase to around $38 billion by 2007. The need of trained manpower in this area is sharply on the rise but there are very few training institutions in the world where such training-cum-live project is provided.

PROJECTS

The project shall be based on a biological question which can be answered using already-existing or inhouse bioinformatics tools. A list of suggested topics is available below but you may also choose your own, subject to approval.

E-mail your first three choices (including any of your own ideas) along with completely filled application form to training@acsbioinformatics.com. We will then allocate the projects to pairs - priority will be given to those who submitted their preferences earlier.

ACS GRADING

The project's grade will be based on a written report (see below) and a 15-minute presentation to the class. The grade will not be based on whether you produced exciting or positive results but rather on intelligent use of the correct online Bioinformatics tools & databases or development of meaningful databases & tools.

WRITTEN REPORT

A good project report will include the following:

  • Background to the problem.
  • Clear definition of the problem.
  • Description and justification of data sources.
  • Explanation and justification of methods of data analysis.
  • Description of results of analysis.
  • Conclusions based on results.
  • Possible directions for future research.
  • Full list of references.

You should aim to keep your report to within 40 pages. It may be typed in English.

SCOPE OF TRAINING

This semester project in Bioinformatics aims to provide exposure to some of the modern bio-tools, biological databases and their applications in Biological research or Industry. The participants will be interacting with experts in their fields and shall get acquainted with practical aspects of various tools & techniques along with the underlying algorithms. Practicals will be conducted in small groups under the expert supervision. A few demonstrations of research problems will also be conducted.

FEES: As mentioned in the online registration form.

i.e., Rs. ………………... for ………. months, per candidate excluding boarding and lodging charges.

The boarding & lodging has to be arranged by students themselves. However, guidance and help may be provided on individual request. Required demand draft should be made in favour of  ‘Advance Computer System’ payable at ‘Lucknow’.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Due to limited seats, the selection shall be made by a committee. The selection shall depend upon the academic background and computational/Molecular Biology skills of the students. However selection criteria will be broad based such that the students from different regions of the country can be accommodated. The selected candidates will be informed by e-mail and the demand drafts of non-qualifying candidates will be returned by registered post.
