Summer Training 2010

SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAM
Tentative date JUNE, 2010- JULY ,2010
Registrations Open

The Program
The Summer Training Program in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology at the ACS-bioINFORMATICS, will offer intensive research training opportunities to undergraduate/postgraduate students interested in careers in Bioinformatics/Biotechnology/Life Sciences.

The program will run from June, 2010- July , 2010 ,  although earlier arrivals and later departures can be envisaged (this will need to be arranged on a case-by-case basis between individual group leaders and participating students)

1
Hands-on training

Hands-on training experience under the supervision of ACS-bioINFORMATICS Experts

Each student will be matched with a specific laboratory based on the student's interest and background. The student will be working as a member of the research group for the period of training. Once admitted to the program, the student will work under the supervision of the lab head or a member of his/her research group (graduate student or postdoctoral fellow), as specified below, on a specific project related to the laboratory's research programs

 2
lecture session

Seminar and Workshop
The participants will attend a series of seminars and workshops given by faculty and researchers from the reputed organization. The seminars will cover a variety of topics ranging from research by ACS-bioINFORMATICS faculty, ethical conducts in research, as well as preparing for graduate school and a career in science. In addition, one session will be devoted to the participants presenting their own research project. The goals of these seminars are to broaden the participants' scientific knowledge, to understand and appreciate the importance and impact of basic research in their everyday life and encourage them to pursue a career in science.

Examples of some seminar topics are:

1. Technical writing
2. Communication skills
3. Ethics in research
4. Biological Library research skills
5. The current trend
6. The path to a successful career in Bioinformatics/Biotechnology.

 6
Informal Event

Informal Social Event
Special events will be organized to promote interaction between the participants and graduate students as well as expert from the field. These events will provide a venue for the students to engage other students and expert in informal discussion on issues related to their research projects, graduate training and career opportunities in the bioinformatics/biotechnology/life sciences

3  4
Poster Sessions and Mini Symposium

Research Report and Poster Presentation
Each participant will be required to submit a formal written report and present the results of their research at a mini symposium to be held at the end of the program. The mini-symposium presents an opportunity for participants to experience presenting their data to their peers and the scientific community at the ACS-bioINFORMATICS.

Benefits to the Students ( The participants will benefit from)

  • Hands-on research experience and training and exposure to cutting-edge research.
  • Experience what is it like to be a member of a research community working at the forefront of science, medicine and biotechnology.
  • The opportunity to apply what was learned in the classroom to understanding and solving actual research problems in the laboratory.
  • Gain better understanding of the scientific process and the application of the knowledge gained from basic science research and state of the art techniques to solve complex problems in biology and medicine.
  • Improve your critical thinking skills, including learning how to evaluate scientific information, design experiments, formulate ideas and test hypotheses.
  • Explore career opportunities in academia by experiencing the excitement, frustration, and challenges of scientific research and gain an insight into what a career in the science entails.
  • Prepare for future independent research projects and advanced research in graduate school.

Selection Criteria
Each participant will be required to submit a formal written report and present the results of their research at a mini symposium to be held at the end of the program. The mini-symposium presents an opportunity for participants to experience presenting their data to their peers and the scientific community at the ACS-bioINFORMATICS.

Additional Requirements
The nature of the program requires full commitment from the participants. All the participants are required to attend and participate in all scheduled events and activities related to the program. Therefore, participants may not attend another program or commit to other activities during the duration of this program that could interfere with their work schedule.

Award
A Certificate from ACS-bioinformatics for all successful candidates.
